Stephenson drives the future with cutting-edge green chemistry solutions

In the complex cosmetic market, brands and manufacturers increasingly rely on innovative solutions and pioneering alternatives to replace conventional ingredients. This is no longer a nice-to-have but a sustainability imperative.

Our Durosoft® range is made with natural vegetable oils through an esterification process, delivering sustainable, performance-driven solutions. The range offers formulation labs and contract manufacturers access to sustainable products and innovative formulations that meet and often exceed conventional products' quality, application flexibility, and efficacy when formulating hair and skincare solutions.

A sustainability mindset

As the intersection between the environment, regulatory standards, and sustainability continues to shift and adapt, it will fuel growth in sustainable beauty and skincare products – from $642mn in 2022 to an estimated $1,095mn by 2030.1

Furthermore, it is estimated that up to 40% of shoppers now prioritise natural and sustainable components and ingredients in their beauty and personal care products. This will continue to drive increased dedicated research for sustainable ingredients and cosmetics, including esters. Esters currently dominate the market - expected to attain a CAGR of 5,5% between 2022 and 2030.2

It is important to note that consumers are not only pledging to sustainable change; cosmetic giants, such as L'Oreal, are too. L'Oreal has stated it seeks to achieve a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per product by 2030 while championing biodiversity and circular economy principles. Another example is Tropic. This certified carbon-neutral brand is helping to protect 65,000 ha of forest from unsustainable palm oil conversion in Indonesia.3

Critically, the sustainability conversation is going broader. We are seeing questions around the requirement to develop targeted multifunctional products that align with the skinimalism ethos. After all, if a consumer doesn't use a product or has too many on the shelf, is it still sustainable?

It also unpacks questions about natural ingredients' role in the sustainability debate. While natural ingredients could be more sustainable, their footprint can be higher than that of synthetic products if you consider how resource-demanding agriculture is.4

The Durosoft advantage
